Music@Malling launch partnership with The National Trust at Ightham Mote

Music@Malling are delighted to be working in partnership with The National Trust on a series of events that link historic buildings and collections with music.  The partnership launches in September at Ightham Mote with  concerts that feature the music of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn on a piano associated with both composers which belonged to the distinguished Kent-born contralto, Mary Shaw who was a soloist at the Coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838 and premiered works by Mendelssohn, Verdi and Rossini. Her collection – including a stunning painting by Daniel Maclise – are held in Ightham Mote.

One of the concerts features rarely performed music by the 14th Century owner of Ightham, Sir William Haute in a fascinating concert of pre-reformation vocal music performed by The Marian Consort.

Music@Malling is Back in Schools!!!

We were delighted to be able to return to in-person outreach earlier this summer with Revolting Rhymes!  8 primary schools were involved in whole-class composition and performance with members of Chamber Domaine performing alongside led by Jason Rowland.  The children and staff were brilliant and came up with fantastic creative ideas.  One teacher commented:  “There was a visible ‘wow’ moment which the professional musicians played.  To see the children’s jaws drop was a marvellous moment.”  Funded by The Kent Community Foundation; Garfield Weston Foundation; Malling Memorial Trust and Arts Council England – this project will engage 24 primary schools across the academic year. There is nothing like live music to inspire creativity and wellbeing!!

Music@Malling launch The Scratch Orchestra

Music@Malling are delighted to launch The Scratch Orchestra which brings young musicians and their families together to compose, create and recreate music in the wonderful setting of Malling Abbey.  Led by internationally renowned animateur  Jason Rowland, the ensemble will meet 6 times a year and will bring the community together through creative activities working alongside top professional musicians. Details of dates and registration are available on our website and social media.

The Music@Malling Scratch Orchestra has been inspired by the work of Howard Skempton – featured in Music@Malling 2022 – who established The Scratch Orchestra in the 1960’s in London with composers Cornelius Cardew and Michael Parsons. We are grateful to The Garfield Weston Foundation; Kent Community Foundation; Arts Council England; Whitehead Monckton and Kent County Council for supporting this important outreach project which is FREE for participants.
