Spadework 2025
Music@Malling are launching a pilot programme with local charity Spadework using music to work with people with learning and other disabilities, dementia and people wanting to improve their mental wellbeing. By having regular musical activities with these groups, we aim to inspire creativity and make people feel less isolated and more independent by connecting them with the local community.
We are delighted that this project is funded by a National Lottery Community Grant and is free to participants.
Running from 1st August to September 30th, 2025, a weekly programme of workshops and informal performances at Spadework are planned featuring Music@Malling artists including James Pearson – Artistic Director of Ronnie Scotts; Callum Au – Trombone; Mikeleiz-Zucchi Duo; Stephen Devine – Harpsichord and members of Chamber Domaine and The Marian Consort.
Bespoke playlists will be created each week for participants to provide continuity between workshops and performances. Carers will also participate.
“Music@Malling is all about bringing world class musicians into the heart of the community and the many well documented benefits this brings. We are delighted to be working with Spadework on this groundbreaking project that will fire up creativity and bring enjoyment to its beneficiaries including visiting concerts during the Music@Malling Festival this September.” Thomas Kemp – Artistic Director
The NHS National Clinical Director for Dementia, Alistair Burns recently commented: “Music and memory have a powerful connector. Music lights up emotional memories – everyone remembers songs from their past…Music can have many benefits in the setting of dementia. It can help reduce anxiety and depression, help maintain speech and language, is helpful at the end of life, enhances quality of life and has a positive impact on carers.”
Kris Healey, Spadework CEO said, “We are looking forward to working with Music@Malling on this pilot programme. At Spadework, we are committed to providing high quality activities. This is a wonderful way of bringing the best music experience to people within the Spadework community.
