DURING THE CALL

After a brief welcome, the workshop will begin with a short warm-up lasting 5-10 minutes. Nigel will then introduce some of the techniques that our singers employ to create Tenebrae’s distinctive sound, and you’ll have the opportunity to sing each work twice, with Nigel conducting via Zoom. So that you can hear all voice parts, Nigel will conduct along to Tenebrae’s own recordings, which you will be able to hear.

Throughout the session, you’ll receive guidance about the specific challenges posed by these works, with demonstrations from our Associate Artists Hannah King and Benedict Flinn.

We anticipate that the session will last around 90 minutes, closing with a brief Q&A session.

TECH TIPS

In order to get the most out of the workshop, we recommend following these guidelines:

Ensure that you’re in the best spot for broadband before we begin. We know from our testing that you may experience a lag in Nigel’s conducting if your broadband is a little slow. If this happens, don’t worry! The aim of the session is for you to learn from Nigel’s interpretation and technique, so sing along with what you can hear and concentrate on his musical expression rather than on his beat.

Please ensure that your microphone is on mute. This will ensure that everyone is able to hear Nigel clearly. If you have a question, feel free to raise it in the chat box and we will respond as quickly as possible.

You will be able to hear the tracks Nigel is sharing through Zoom. However, if you know that your computer’s built-in speakers are limited, you could link up to external speakers or listen through headphones to ensure better sound quality.

We will encourage you to stand for the warm-up if you are able, and you may also choose to stand throughout if this is how you prefer to sing. If so, please ensure your computer is at the right height.

You may want to turn on ‘Speaker View’ while Nigel is conducting so that you have a clearer view. On the other hand, you may choose ‘Gallery View’ if you prefer to see the other participants and make it more of an ensemble experience. It’s up to you!
